My teaching philosophy is to create an environment where children
feel safe to take chances and make mistakes. I don't want to just
impart facts and information to students, but rather to teach them to
think, and solve problems. I hope that the students learn to look at
the world from different perspectives, and to be interested in the
world around them. I set high expectations for every student, and try
very hard to come up with different ways to teach the curriculum so
that no matter what type of learner the student is, he/she can be
successful. I don't make excuses for my students, nor do I accept
excuses from them. In my class, effort is everything. My students
know that in the classroom I am the leader, but they also tend to view
me as a very motherly figure. Because of our small class size, I am
able to have a close, personal relationship with each of my students
and their families. We have three basic classroom rules that seem to
cover just about everything:
1) Try to do your best everyday.
2) Practice self-control
3) Practice the Golden Rule.
I let my students know that even though they are very young, they
still get to make choices but that they must be prepared to accept the
consequences of those choices. If my students have the strong
foundation that will carry them into the next grade, and they feel
good about their year with me, then I feel like that is success.
